The tiny jalapeno chilli pepper is astonishing. Small and mighty, capable of bringing tears to your eyes with its tangy heat. Its secret, however, is that it’s full of healthy vitamins great for keeping skin healthy and your body ticking: the typical jalapeno pepper packs more vitamin C than an orange, and plenty of vitamin B6 – as well as minerals, fibre and antioxidants. So while it packs a fiery punch, consuming jalapeños is also a natural way to get some goodness in your body.
Just like our chutneys and relishes, our Sweet Chili Jelly is made by slowly blending the ingredients in steam-heated pans in small batches for a home-cooked feel and exceptional quality control. While jalapeno peppers aren’t native to Scotland, the McGerty’s team know all there is to know about cooking these peppers correctly to unlock their flavourful potential. The intense jalapeno peppers are mixed with sugars for sweetness and red wine vinegar for a splash of acidity. Finally, fruit pectin is added to bring the ingredients together and to achieve that incredible jelly consistency. This process isn’t quick – the flavours need a few hours to become friends. Like all good things, our Sweet Chilli Jelly takes time, but is worth the wait.
Once we’ve slow-cooked the jelly to the correct consistency, it’s ready for packing. Hand-packed into small plastic pots by the McGerty’s team, it’s the perfect size to grab on your way to work, to share at a picnic, or to serve up at a lunch or dinner table. The handy size of the pot means you waste less of the jelly (and saves you wasting money) and it takes up less room in your fridge.
While the term jelly is how we describe this little pot of sweet fireworks, there’s no wobbling to be found here. Our production process makes sure our jelly is firmly set and spreadable, with a jam-like consistency. So you can dip into the pot with a knife and enjoy it with anything that needs a sweet, subtle warming kick. Our favourite ways to enjoy include:
