There’s nothing plain about our Wheat Toasts. Low in calories, high in fibre, their wheat content is beneficial for health. Most importantly, wheat’s combination of protein, B vitamins, dietary fibre, and phytochemicals (chemicals produced by plants that help protect our cells from damage) mean our Wheat Toasts harness loads of natural goodness and give you energy. Plus, more dietary fibre means lowered GI (glycaemic index), and reduced risk of cardio‐vascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Our Wheat Toasts are made with expert artisanal passion from a dedicated team of chefs at The Artisan Bread Company. Using a time-honoured classic bread recipe by our artisanal bakers, our toasts are double baked, which helps the toasts keep their freshness for longer. This is normal for Mediterranean-inspired bread, where the warmer climate makes bread go stale more quickly. We’ve continued that tradition to keep things authentic and real.
The wheat flour is mixed with handful of simple ingredients like yeast, salt and sugar to make a dough mixture. Then, we just forget about it. For about six hours. After the dough has proved itself ready for its journey, it’s kneaded by hand and formed into shape, ready for fermentation and baking. After it’s baked once, it’s sliced and put into our ovens a second time to toast to become lightly browned and crispy. This is a slow and steady method practised for hundreds of years by bakers across the Mediterranean.
The result? Toasts that are a handy portion size, smaller than regular cream crackers. An ideal quick fix for snacking or light meals, or a busy, on the go lunch.
Thin, crisp, and with the perfect snappability, there’s a million different ways to enjoy our Wheat Toasts. Italians would dip these in their morning espresso. The French may top them with a soft cheese of an evening, paired with a full-bodied wine. But they really can be used any way you want. Our favourite ways include:
Using as a simple alternative to bread
Use as a nice light snack between meals
Partner with antipasti and cheeses
Use for dips and soups
Snap over salads
